Science Fiction is as it name implies, a fictionous (made up) story with normally set in a futuristic world.  This is not to say that stories set in the future are science fiction.  Science Fiction (SF) normally involves an imaginary future where there are technological advances beyond our current science.  Or it could involved an advanced technological achievement.  Sometimes, stories that do not fit in modern life fiction are classified as Science Fiction.

SF writers have been around for a long time.  Man had dreamt of going to the moon to diving 2000 leagues under the sea.  In those times, these ideas seemed outrageous.  However, in this century of ours, we have achieved all these "dreams".  So perhaps SF can be said to drive the creative thoughts of Man, pushing them to achieve what they currently could not.

This is a 5 book series written by the late Roger Zelazny.  It revolves around the thoughts and action of Corwin, prince of Amber in his quest for revenge against his brother Eric.  The royal family of Amber have the power of the Pattern which gives them power over the Shadow worlds.  A setting where anything can happen and nobody can be trusted.
